Velodrome I

Wood, steel - circumference 150m, width 4m

In a book called The Salamander Eaters there is a passage about a velodrome in the Luchtbal district of Antwerp, built by a teacher with his pupils in the 1930s. This passage became the starting point for the construction of Velodrome I Luchtbal, a 600m2 cycle track. Building the velodrome, the story gradually came to span the history of the district. The work can equally be read as an interactive installation in the public space and as a line drawing in the landscape.

The track was open to the public for half a year. After that, it was taken apart and in the coming years other artists were invited to build a new installation with it in the neighborhood. 600m2 of Wood is a durable artistic concept of Elke & Bruno. Every artist who gets the wood will engage with the legacy and the traces left on it by previous artists and users of the art work.
