Velodrome II

Wood, steel - circumference 100m, width variable, highest inclination 28°

Curators Gautier Platteau and Melanie Deboutte invited us to build an installation for the expo FLUX in the public space of Kortrijk. Flux was part of a larger festival inaugurating the seven new bridges over the river Leie. We chose this square for three reasons. The area was closed off from the city for a long time due to the long-term work on the bridges. A monumental tree towers over the square. The square was large enough for a monumental work.

We conceived the velodrome as an eighth bridge - a bridge without beginning and end; a mathematical yet at the same time organic drawing in the public space around the tree that provides the square with oxygen. Velodroom Kortrijk (bridge 8) was at all times freely accessible to everyone.

Many thanks to Frederik Vanthournout and Halte-R for the hard work, and to Vandecasteele Wood Import for the generously sponsored Siberian larch.
